It’s great to hear that the Catalans have honored Pedro. But he was never a co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. He performed there. In fact, one of his plays was staged there. The sad truth is that Pedro was pretty much shut out of the Cafe, at least during the 70s, when I knew him and read my work there as well. It’s a pity that the Nuyorican Poets Cafe is now claiming he was one of its cofounders. They never gave him the respect or attention he deserved. Now that he’s dead, they’re exploiting his name.
