Some poetic justice would have been nice. He should have been trampled by a herd of wild horses or something.

Sylvia, I am nominating you to pick the next Slaves book. Any ideas?

I think it’s pretty obvious we are all hoping for another Western…

Well, I have been meaning to read Lonesome Dove… wink

Seriously, I’ll come up with some possibilities later this afternoon.

Can we read something by a woman?

Sure, or perhaps about a woman? I’ve been wanting to read Vanity Fair (though it is rather long), but also Daniel Deronda and Rebecca. Or perhaps all the way back to Sappho? Oh, if I only had a copy of this book. Any bright ideas out there?

UPDATE:  Typepad is up now and so is my post. I won’t cross-post it here since I’m late. I read everyone’s posts--good stuff, everyone! Here’s hoping we like the next book better…

How about Willa Cather, or Edith Wharton?

Or Sarah Orne Jewett?

I just read Vanity Fair a year or so ago so would prefer Eliot, Wharton, Cather or Jewett but will gladly dig in to whatever you have a hankering for Sylvia smile

I agree, time for some women authors (or main characters). Great suggestions.

I’m sorry that I missed out on the Wister read, but I’m looking forward to savouring all of your posts about it when I get back from my trip (and no longer paying by the minute for my internet access!).  Given my current Robert Louis Stevenson obsession, I was going to suggest Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the next read.  However, if it’s female authors we’re after, I’d nominate anything by Muriel Spark.

I’ve come down to a choice between Eliot and Spark. Since we have been tending towards shorter works (and we’re getting dangerously close to summer) maybe Silas Marner or The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Thoughts?

Oh, I’d vote for Spark! Loitering with Intent was one of the best books I read last year. I’d love to read something else by her.

I’ve never read Spark but would love an excuse to. And short = good.
