I’ve been reading “A Good Place for the Night”, a book of short stories by an Israeli author, Savyon Libbrecht.  I love the prose: it drew me in right away.  The effects of physical and cultural displacement is one of the many themes that the collection explores.  This is reflected in the varied settings of each story: Munich, America, the Kibbutz, Japan, etc.  It’s also, I think, about the lies we tell ourselves, and what happens when these lies crumble.

Since Ella has just finished a series of interviews in which she asks this question of her subjects, and since I’ve just posted a summary of those responses and linked to this thread, I’ll state for the record that my favourite underappreciated author is Amin Maalouf.
