That sounds right to me, Litlove.  Yikes, this book is both fascinating and confusing!  There’s a lot to keep track of, and the narrator gives out information without making a big deal of it, so you have to pay careful attention or you’ll miss something big.

That’s how I read it too Litlove. Surely if three of us read it the same way we must be right smile

Thanks Litlove.  I thought I had read that correctly.  There are so many details to keep track of.  Isn’t it strange that the whole town seems to be aware of this phenomenon?  But they all just carry on as if it is expected.  They won’t let anyone leave until it has played itself out again.  You wonder if Gwynn even was able to leave the valley?  Nancy wasn’t allowed--at least it doesn’t appear so.

I think the point is that, just as in the legend, the woman has been in love with the Lleu equivalent but then falls for the incomer, in this case Bertram, and he is then killed.

I’m sorry, by the way if I haven’t responded to messages on the main site or left comments on posts there, but it isn’t accepting my passwords.

That’s odd, Ann. Did you try the “forgot my password” feature so you could retrieve/change it?

On a different bent, I’m in the middle of Red Shift the novel that followed The Owl Service, I think. Parts of my reading experience are the same and some have improved, primarily because Garner is a smidgen less opaque in this one. Just a smidgen. And, again, I find that I’m not enjoying the book but am still hopelessly intrigued. I don’t know what that means.

I am impressed Imani that you would try another Garner novel so close to Owl Service especially since the Owl Service experience wasn’t ideal. I know I couldn’t do that.

What can I say? I was helplessly intrigued by “Owl Service” hence the reread. “The Red Shift”, I’m happy to say, cured me. I’m good now.

I just informed Ann that she was supposed to pick. (She wasn’t aware of how the system worked.) She tagged me but I just picked some books earlier this year. I haven’t been with the group long enough to know how long ago others had taken their turn in choosing a book. Is there anyone who hasn’t been in the hot seat for a long time who’d like to step up so that Ann can formally ask them? smile

If not I said I’d go at the bat again.

I don’t mind you picking again Imani. It has been a long time since Danielle picked a book though, so maybe she has something she’d like to suggest?

I’d love to choose again--as long as no one minds and everyone else has had a turn.  I will post a list to choose from on Wednesday.

I’ve posted book choices.  I hope everyone finds something appealing in the list.  Thanks.
