After writing two novels, querying, and meeting with rejection, Rebecca Jane seeks solice in blogging.  She’s been writing and posting flash fiction since March 2006.  This message is just to announce that now you can subscribe to Rebecca Jane’s blog.  But, also, if you have any thoughts on flash fiction, please share them here.  How is flash fiction different from poetry?  Is flash fiction “the web-friendly genre” that its writers sometimes proclaim it to be?  What can flash fiction do that poetry and longer fiction cannot?  Is flash fiction less regarded in the mainstream than poetry, longer fiction, and non-fiction?  If so, why?  Do you write flash fiction?  If so, Rebecca Jane would love to read your work and discuss this topic.

The problem is, they’re too easy to do, and too difficult to do well. Which makes for a lot of dross. 

I see two general categories: one group that falls roughly into variations of prose poems, whether from the symbolist, stream of association tradition (going back to poets like Mallarmé), or the shorter productions of some of the language poets. The other class is more narrative driven; either very short “stories,” or pieces that work like Joyce’s early “Epiphanies.”
